About The Author:

Hello there! My name is Mark David Pullen. I am an author of fast-paced, Action/Adventure, Sci-Fi/Fantasy novels geared toward middle-grade readers. I currently live in Upstate New York with my wife, two children, and our loveable old hound dog, Toby.

My new novel, Freedom Through The Narrow Gate, follows the adventures of a young mouse named Jacob and his friend Rudy. If you like stories featuring talking animals, I can tell you more about it.

About the Book :

Jacob and his allies must outwit their enemies and find forgiveness. But in a world where legend comes to life, will they live to tell the tale?

Inspired by his grandfather’s tales of “The Legend Of The Great Mouse”, Jacob yearns for an adventure beyond the mouse village. But when a simple blackberry hunt with his friend Rudy leads to their capture by the feared Swamp Rats, his dream turns into a dangerous reality.

A far cry from his bedtime tales, inside the treacherous swamp Jacob quickly realizes this is no place for a young mouse. Their fates intertwined, he soon befriends an unexpected ally- a rat burdened by his past- as they challenge Caine, the deranged ruler of the wetlands, and his evil plans to destroy the mouse village.

Will they be able to outsmart this formidable foe, or will the story of the little mouse’s adventure end in tragedy?

In a parallel timeline to The Oasis King, this second book in The Oasis Chronicles, Freedom Through The Narrow Gate, continues the series of action-adventure tales for young readers who seek new lands, heart-racing challenges, and unexpected twists.

One Challenge for Writing the book

As much fun as this story was to write, it was a tremendous labor of love. I started drafting ideas for this story over a decade ago, and it has gone through several rounds of editing and revisions to get to this final product. This was a labor in itself because, along the way, while discussing The Oasis Chronicle series with a publisher, he informed me that where it fits into the series itself needed to be adapted because the length of the series was too long. So, Freedom Through The Narrow Gate had to be sprinkled with storylines and plot points from other books in the series to shorten the overall series from 7 books down to 5 books.

As a child of the 1990s, I remember yearning for adventure. Growing up with movies like “The Pagemaster,” “Jumanji,” “The Goonies,” and “The Sandlot” only heightened my desire for adventure and inspired me to write adventure stories. My childhood was adventurous but not Hollywood-worthy.

What is one of your favorite childhood “adventure” memories?

Mine is my “basketball hoop summer.” The summer I was 15, my sisters and I, and all the neighbor kids met every morning at the basketball hoop at the end of our driveway. We spent the days riding our bikes into town, going to the movies, fishing, playing basketball, and staying out past the time the streetlights came on at bonfires and playing hide and seek in the dark. I look forward to hearing yours below!
